Environmental
Health program
An another memorable day for our life regarding community
medicine was began. We had a lecture on environmental health. It was done by the PHI. It was based
on waste disposal. The PHI discussed about that how this proper waste disposal
improve our quality of life & how it affects our general health condition .
After getting good knowledge of solid waste disposal, we went to see Karadiyana
garbage dumping site.
It was one of large dumping site in srilanka. Initially land
was maintained by private company & now it is maintain by government
sector(waste disposal & management authority.) about 50 Staff members are
working there including 30 garbage collectors .they were received 100 tones of solid
garbage per day from variouths areas including Maharagama, Homagama, boralasgamuwa, kesbawa, kottawa&
Moratuwa.
They are trying to handle garbage properly. They use specific
methods to dispose the garbage to minimize environmental pollution &
getting affect people. So that they have chosen the place that is away from the town & it is a flat land. Then
they put new garbage in to a dig & it fill by old garbage. They take care
about reducing the population of mosquitoes & birds, other animals who are carrying
garbage away from the damp. at the same time they have taken necessary steps to
clean water that flows from the damp to the river. The authorities play mach
attention about health condition of the workers so they provide vaccine,
uniform, boots,& gloves free of charge.
Now they have planed to establish power plant & compost
production in near feature. they said that they are receiving only very few complains
from the neighbors due to proper management of the dump. They are doing good
job to community by giving good solution to the hedge problem.
I should thank to community medicine department for giving
us a good opportunity to understand different aspects of problems that are in
the community.
