Field visit-Karadiyana waste management project
It was our second day of the appointment. Early morning we
went to boralasgamuwa MOH office by our faculty bus. Though we were there on
time the lecture was started after 8.30am.At the MOH, PHI gave us a proper
explanation about the available excreta disposal systems in rural and urban areas,
the role of the PHI in the provision of sanitary latrines for the communities,
the health hazards of solid waste and water sampling.
The
lecture was finished at10.00am.then we went to see Karadiyana waste management project.
It is a large dumping ground situated near to Aththidiya sanctuary. When we
reached there, all administrative staff gave a brief idea about this
project. Earlier this project has started by private sector and two years ago
it has taken to government sector due to poor management.
Waste
collected from Dehiwala, Maharagama, and Panadura & other areas are bringing to this place and
landed to particular area of the ground. There are people who are working in
this project by separating plastics, metal, glass….End of the month their
separated items are sold by project and earned money.85% of this money given as
their salary and 15% of money using as their welfare facilities. However most
of the workers are earning more than Rs40.000.All the workers are vaccinated for
major diseases like TB…
However this land will be filled
completely within another 2 years. So there will be no place to waste
management in future and it will become burden problems to country. Officers in
charge also mentioned their future project of manufacturing bio gases from
garbage. If it becomes successful garbage won’t be burden problems to our
country in future.
