KARADIANA GARBAGE DISPOSAL
Garbage disposal....major
problem in urban areas as you already known...
But,have you ever thought
about their valubility?
If you know,there are people
who earns enough money from garbage,you may be wonder.
but it is true!and al so
different experience which I have ever had.
-2012.8.14-this is the date
that have sheduled for environmental health.
we went MOH office and
they gave us basic knowledge about the environmental health.And also they
explained ,how the garbage in Colombo is disposed.
then we visited to
Karadiana garbage site at about 10am.On the way,I imagined about the
site.Soon,I reminded the nawinna garbage smell.
however finally after about
15 mins we reached there .But there was no smell or flies as I expected before .It
is entirely different ,what I expected before.
Karadiana garbage disposal
is one of the largest garbage disposal in Sri Lanka.This garbage extended to
about 25 acres and collecting about 500 metric tons of garbage every
day.So,working staff have to work all365 days.
There are about 30 rag
collectors in the site and they earn around 40000Rsper week by selling what
they have collected.they separate the plastics,tin and iron,copper and
degradable waste.
They are given
uniforms,boots and gloves to minimize their exposure to garbage and the
vaccines are given free of charge to prevent communicable diseases among them.
How ever, if garbage
disposal not managed properly the sanitation of the community would be affected
making a heavy burden on the health care services
