It was 17th August. We gathered at the university premises to visit IDH where most of us had never been before. We visited there at about 8am and we were warmly welcomed by the matron of the hospital.
There we were given a brief discription about the history of the hospital and also about it's development up to the present stage.IDH;Infectious Disease Hospital was established long ago in the era in which our country was under the British rule.IDH ,Angoda is the ideal infectious disease hospital in South Asia.In the past it played a major role in control of infectious diseases and currently it contributes to the health systemin a wide range of activities.
It was established in the highest location in Colombo district;41 feet from the sea level thereby expecting the least spread of diseases and a good ventilation.Today the hospital consists of 2 medical wards,HIV ward,Dengue management unit,Isolation area,Paediatric ward,PCU and an ICU.
Then we were given a description of the infection control system of the hospital.
Universal Precautions
                     1.Hand washing
                     2.Personal protective equipment (PPE)
                     3.Sterilization and disinfection
                     4.Waste disposal
                     5.Environmental cleaning

The PPE consist of a high neck color, long sleeve pijama kit with an overall, apron, cap, goggles, shoe covers and gloves. We were demonstrated the way and the order of wearing the equipments. And also the proper way of transferring a patient with an infectious disease, the process that is been doneto minimize the spread of the disease;when consulting a patient, when clinics are held and in daily routine in the wards and after death how to dispose a dead bodies without spreading the pathogens.
Then we visited the isolation area where seperate rtooms were there to keep the patients avoiding the spread of the disease. The ultimate feeling I got from the visit was that it is very precious to treat them,to be with them and not to let them be alone.
