visit to infectious disease hospital

IDH…….!!!!!!!! A place filled of germs…….
That is what the image we had before we entering to the IDH (infectious disease hospital). But from the moment we enter to the IDH, that bad picture begins to melt..
It was a rainy day, 17th of august in 2012. We went there by our faculty bus.
We were warmly welcome by the hospital staff & guided to the hall in a friendly manner.

A tidy environment….open corridors…..breeze touched by fragrance of “araliya flower”…….OK …IS THIS IDH?????
I was questioning my self…..

Few minutes later the Matron of the hospital came and talk to us about the history of IDH. Then she told us about the procedures which practices in hospital in order to prevent cross infections.. We were lucky to hear that this is the most ideal Infectious Disease Hospital in South Asia. She is the one who told us that this hospital not only a infectious disease hospital, but it also having
      • Out Door Patient Unit
      • Medical wards
      • Pediatric wards
      • Dengue management wards
      • ICU
      • Quarantine unit
      • Clinics

Then she teaches us about Universal precautions practicing in IDH. Those are
      • Hand washing
      • PPE
      • Sterilization and disinfections
      • Waste disposal
      • Environmental cleaning

This lesson was mainly target on PPE (Personal Protective Equipments).
She nicely demonstrates it with the aid of our colleague. (We should thankful to Eranthaka who wore all those heavy clothing for the sake of our learning)
PPE consists of
      • Pyjama
      • Overall
      • Polythene cover
      • N95 mask
      • Goggles
      • Cap
      • Foot cover
      • Gloves

Then we went to the quarantine unit. There she demonstrates us about the procedures that follow in entering the room of a patient, cleaning their waste products, leaving the room..ect..
They mainly use TCL as the disinfectant… (They make it by adding 30g into lL of water)

We were surprise by hearing some of their experiences in the IDH.. Anyway it was an unforgettable day for us. We must thankful to Matron Mrs. G.C.Udugamakorala and the whole staff to their dedication towards the society.
We leave the hospital after lea rning a golden lesson
If we follow the correct procedure in correct way in correct place, we can overcome many major problems easily………………
