Since childhood we have come across that prevention of diseases is better than cure. And the disease control unit which is situated in Public health complex at Narahenpita is the major institute that works on prevention and control of infectious diseases in Sri Lanka. This unit is widely recognized by general public with recent dengue outbreaks.

Deputy director of malaria elimination programme explained about their procedures to keep Sri Lanka free from indigenous malaria and that imported cases of malaria is now the main contributory factor.(21 indigenous cases and 56 imported cases of malaria in 2012.) He showed us the success they have gained through the hard work of the members of the unit.

In cancer control unit they are educating people about the increasing burden of cancer. They try to improve the knowledge of people about oral, breast and cervical cancers which are the commonest cancers in Sri Lanka and which are preventable easily through life style modifications and which carries excellent prognosis if detected in the early stage. They educate people about self examination of mouth and breast, screening facilities for cervical and breast cancers and how to minimize risk factors.

Currently dengue has become one of the biggest problems in public health sector. So the dengue control unit, being the busiest programme, is dealing with enhancing peoples' concerns of the disease. They are coordinating with MOH divisions for the environmental modification and vector control pragrammes.

Being a completely curable disease, good patient compliance is the most important fact for the control of tuberculosis.Tuberculosis control unit is currently educating people on the compliance of the patients and the consequences faced by both the patient and the society due to poor compliance with the emergence of MDR-TB.
