                       Colombo Friend-in-Need Society

The 2nd week of our community medicine clerkship yielded a truely memorable and inspiring experience in the form of a visit to the colombo friend-in-need society located at Sir James Peiris Mawatha, Colombo 2.

Established in 1831 this society (NGO) has been engaging in providing humanitarian assistance to the disabled and is also the oldest charitable organisation in the country. managed by the Board of Management and funded by a number of governmental and non-governmental associations such as the ministry of social services, Rotary club, Lions club and the public  the society specializes in manufacturing prosthesis (artificial limbs) to amputees. these prosthetics are tailored to the specific requirements of each individual.

a wide range of prosthetics are available
Apart from manufacturing a wide range of prosthesis and orthosis the organisation also provides the following services
most of the workers are amputees themselves!
  • Training programmes
  • Mobile limb fitting camp - a mobile workshop that covers all parts of the country, mainly targeted at amputees who are unable to come to colombo. A number of mobile camps were conducted in areas like Mannar, Chettikulam and Vavuniya with the end of the civil war.
  • Self employment projects - amputees are given loans for self employment to encourage independent living
  • Aidex annual Sportsmeet - held every october with the participation of 'jaipur' limb users in order to help them live as normal human beings.
  • Hostel accommodation for amputees - two wards for males and another for females. accommodating 30 persons at a time with food and housing provided free of charge
