Hospital waste management in CSTH
Hospital is a place that many types of waste products get
accumulated.
·
Used therapeutic and diagnostic materials (cannulas,
syringes and used contrast media)
·
Wound dressings
·
Food remains
·
Drugs
These waste should managed efficiently before they contaminate
the place and become foci for infections.
At the moment of 1st disposal from ward,
laboratory or theater, hospital waste is categorized. That’s because of,
·
Effective disposal
·
Many of them are infectious, so there’s a risk
of endemic infections unless the proper protective measures are taken.

In
CSTH about 300kg of infected waste and 800kg of general waste get accumulated.
All of this waste is categorized according to above mentioned categorization
and dispose.

Disposal methods

General waste (domestic waste) – are taken away
by municipal council and dumped in waste dumping yards.
·
Infected waste and sharps – ideally should be
incinerated. But due to lack of an incinerator those waste were taken away by
company called Finley. Hospital pays Rs. 65 per 1 kg of infected waste.
·
Body parts –
§ Covered with gauze and packed in yellow sealed
bags.
§ Documentation
§ Stored
in refrigerator of hospital morgue.
§ Once
a week these body parts are taken away by florists to bury under the
supervision of hospital PHI
§ App.
300 kg of placentas plus other body parts are buried per a week.

Body fluids and blood drains from theaters and
labour rooms are directed into a special sealed drainage system which then
empty into general sewage system of hospital.

§ Rejected
films – collected and documented annually and then sold in an auction
§ Developer
solution and other contrast media – put in to general drainage system of
hospital.

disposal of drugs they are inspected by
a committee from MSD (medical supply division) and ministry of health.
§ Buried
in 6-8 feet underground.
Ø Tablet
packs should be torn and tablets should be crushed before burial.
Ø Vials
also should be broken.

containers are sold in auctions.
