Life is uncertainty is a way of life in our hectic world. Illnesses, accidents and miseries are quite common. These unpredictable calamities could be fall us at birth or any time later in one’s life. For some unfortunate people, these afflictions may even be incurable. But, all their tomorrows have not been in vain.
Victoria Home for Incurables housed at Rajagiriya marks its 119th year, having been inaugurated on March 13, 1888. It was founded by the then Governor His Excellency Sir Arthur Gordon to commemorate the Coronation Jubilee of Her Majesty Queen Victoria. It was set up with intention of providing a comfortable Home with medical care for those who by birth, illness or accident, became unfit for work for their livelihood and whose afflictions are of an incurable nature.
Admission to the Victoria homes ,is on the basis of an Application Form available at the Office of the Director. Both males and females of 18 years over and below 55 years, physically handicapped by birth, illness or accident are eligible for admission. At present, there are 87 males and 93 females in the 14 wards. There is a list of 82 registered, awaiting admission. A vacancy occurs on the death of an inmate. Funerals of the inmates are undertaken free of charge by AF Raymonds, Borella.
The inmates are encouraged with facilities to engage in turning out handicrafts by harnessing their talents. There is complete freedom and a peaceful environment for one’s own religious beliefs and rituals. Pilgrimages and picnics are being organized. They often listen to “Dharmadeshana” by renowned priests. Even, variety entertainment programs by renowned artists are arranged at opportune times. In addition to normal medical facilities, needy inmates attend specialist medical clinics at the National Hospital. During their period of stay, basic amenities in food, clothing and shelter are provided in a spirit of human kindness and a feeling of caring affection.
