Visit to Victoria Home
It was a very lazy Saturday, after holiday on friday I was late come to campus. But I was lucky that driver not there to take bus at time.
We went to Victoria home at around 9.30 a.m.There we first got to know about the history, how it developed to present situation, what criteria they admit a patient and how they help to improve their life condition.
Victoria home was established on 13th March of 1888 by the governor of Ceylon, Sir Arthur Gordon. It begun with just 7 residence and first located near the eye of the hospital Colombo and moved to current location in the year 1960.
They admit physically handicapped people by birth, accident or illness between the age of 18-55 years.Currently there are 175 inmates in 14 wards. There are matron, 2 nurses and 50 attendants to help the inmates.
They provide food, shelter, sanitary facilities & medication to inmates. They arrange trips to Anuradhpura, Kandy, Katharagama, Galle once in three month and also going sports meet arranged by Lion Club.About 75 mates are engaged in manufacture of handicraft items. They are given the opportunity to sell these and the proceeds are given back to them.
We saw many people with disability. But after seen their hidden smile felt that it was heaven for them.
