No matter how dark the moment, love and hope are always possible.
-Goerge Chakiris-

A split second can make all the difference..
All our dreams, hopes, plans can come crashing down to a standstill, with just one second of a mishap. Couldn’t It?
 Let’s call him Thushara....
20 year old Thushara was just like any one of us. Being In his youthful days, he too had dreams & hopes. Wanting to get through his degree, get a good job, get married, start a family & in his case, build a house for his parents, as they were living in a house belonging to his uncle. All these dreams of his future came crashing down one day when he went out to his friend’s house. They were climbing a high tree, when he missed his footing & fell off. An appalling accident, within a few minutes brought his world to a shocked still. Sustaining severe injuries, he was admitted to NHSL. Further assessment had revealed spinal injury at the level of L1.

We met Thushara at the Ragama rehabilitation Hospital. Lying supine in a bed, unable to move about on his own, he looked helpless..
Just like everyone else there. Some may call it karma, but in my opinion no one should deserve such a calamity. How brutal is it to have been robbed off of all your dreams in just one second? Just imagine, what would you do if it was you? How would you feel if you wake up tomorrow and learn that you are unable to walk, feed yourselves, and dress yourselves? To know that you would be dependent on someone else, even just to sit up straight for the rest of your life? To realize that instead of you taking care of your parents, it’s them who have to take care of you forever?

It’s certainly not easy for all the “Thusharas” at Ragama rehabilitation hospital. They are brought here, referred by doctors to be more precise, when they are probably at their worst possible mentality. They need reviving, they need hope, they need strength both physically as well as mentally to cope up with their transformed life.
The rehabilitation hospital which is the largest in Sri Lanka, indeed provides the maximum possible care for these patients, throughout their process of rehabilitation.

adaptations at occupational therapy unit

A multi disciplinary team approach is used to attend to these patients.
The team consists of consultants, physiotherapists, occupational therapists, social service workers, doctors & nurses. Each one of them has an important role to play, in order to make these patients socially independent as much as possible.

Occupational therapy, physiotherapy, speech therapy, counseling, rheumatologic treatment, vocational training programs, provision of prosthetics & orthotics are among the many services provided here. Situated in a tranquil environment, the surrounding itself is soothing, adding to the mental relaxation of the patients. It made me wish that CSTH, was built in such a surrounding too! Patients would certainly recover in double the time I’m sure ;)

True, all the patients at RRH, were helpless, nevertheless they were all hopeful. Hopeful that one day they would return back to the lives they used to have, hopeful that one day all their dreams & wishes will come true. It reminds me,

“We must accept finite disappointment, but never lose infinite hope”

  1. Good post Dinithi,
I have not been able to read all of your blogs this time as I was on the road a lot, but I see that at least some of you have got the hang of it. The main thing is to think about what you are learning all the time, to do it consciously so that you take away at least some of it for the future
